On the Trail, for Leonidas Hubbard

I've been meaning to finish this mini-book for the past two months and am finally getting to it now. Back in December I asked Larry Desautels, a friend, writer & professor in Buffalo, NY, to help me with the foreword to my book, The Height of Land. Larry decided to write a poem to introduce the work and I sent him some photographs from the Hubbard expedition to assist in his writing. Unfortunately the book went to press before Larry had a chance to finish his writing so I decided to create a separate mini-book for the poem. I am very pleased to share On the Trail, for Leonidas Hubbard, a new book I've made using Larry's writing accompanied with Leonidas Hubbard & Dillon Wallace's photographs from 1903.

Larry's poem is beautiful and haunting. It's perfect for the Hubbard story and I'm so thrilled with this collaboration. I am almost done with the print files (still tweaking text layout & size), I will then be printing and binding them in the studio. The book is 5" tall, by 4" wide/ 8" page spread. The book will be available shortly through Houseboat Press for $5. Stay tuned.

mailing books & prints

Lure of Labrador Project Backers-

I am very pleased to announce that I have in my possession all 400 copies of my photo book, The Height of Land, and will be mailing rewards this week! I just picked up all of the copies this past Thursday from the binder in Philadelphia, PA.

Those of you who pledged $50+ will be receiving a copy of the book and a photographic print. Most of you (#90/150) have completed the recent survey and selected your photograph and specified if you'd like your book signed, personalized, etc. If you haven't done so already please check through your email and look for the survey request and reply as soon as possible. A few of you didn't enter your first and last name on the form so I have no way of knowing who replied. If I have not heard from you, or if you didn't complete the form in full, I will be emailing individuals throughout the week and requesting this information. Mailing these rewards and organizing all this information has been challenging to say the least and I do not want to further delay fulfilling my obligations to you. I apologize if you've received multiple requests or redundancies, just trying to complete my obligations as efficiently and professionally as possible. I really look forward to you receiving your books and artwork and hearing your feedback. This has been a great experience, thank you again for your support and for your patience.

All the best,

Ryan Arthurs

It's here! The Height of Land, by Ryan Arthurs

Picked up a handful of copies of the book earlier this week from Philadelphia, PA. Unfortunately the opening reception that was schedule for Friday, Feb 8th at Aviary Gallery was delayed due to the blizzard. Re-scheduling the reception for Friday, Feb. 22nd from 6-9pm. The good news is that I will have all of the books by that time. Heading to Toronto to the Wilderness Canoe Symposium later this week, then driving through Philadelphia to pick up the remainder of the books.

It is my hope to mail out all the books and remaining Kickstarter rewards the week of Feb. 25th. Thank you everyone for your patience. It's been a very busy and exciting time for me and I really look forward to getting the books into your hands shortly. More to come shortly.

tumblr transition

As my Lure of Labrador Kickstarter project is drawing to a close I am transitioning from posting to this blog to posting to my photo Tumblr. For those unfamiliar with Tumblr it is more socially networked, easier to post photos to and allows for hi-res images. Check out some of my film from the George River and for those of you who want the book to remain a surprise I am not posting photos from that edit at this time. Enjoy. http://ryanarthurs.tumblr.com/

hot off the press

Photobucket Today I received the first copy of the book (image left) and Aviary Gallery's announcement cards (image right). Thrilled with the print quality and color of the book prints and very happy to have more announcement cards to mail out. Lots of framing and web design to do this weekend.

on press

I have some exciting news to share. After several rounds of color proofing and various technical adjustments the book is on press. Fireball Printing in Philadelphia, PA has started to print the first edition of The Height of Land. I've also been trading emails with the bookbinder, Allen Geiser, and everything so far is on schedule. When Allen receives the printed sheets he will begin assembling the signature folds, sowing, debossing, stamping and binding the books. Hoping to have a handful of books (100+) for my February opening at Aviary Gallery and the rest of the books sometime in mid to late February if all goes according to plan. Still scheduled to mail out the book and various Kickstarter rewards at that time. Can't wait to see the result of many months of hard work. Photobucket
I also wanted to let folks know that I am in the process of relaunching my website and should have the new site online within the next week or so. If you would like to order a copy of the book you will be able to do so there. I will also have an expanded edit of the book online but if you want the book edit to remain a surprise do not visit the website, haha.

Lastly, I am crafting a new survey to fulfill print requests. I will be sending that out this week so check your email. If you haven't seen the photographs I am offering they are featured on The Lure of Labrador blog. Speaking of checking your mailbox, be on the look out for several postcards that have been mailed out by various Team Lure of Labrador members.
